In-House Videographer vs. Video Production Partner: What’s Right for Your Business?

by Jake Ressler | Sep 16, 2026

For a lot of growing businesses, video has become essential. But building an internal video department, or handing the job to For a lot of growing businesses, video has become essential. But building an internal video department, or handing the job to your marketing team on top of everything else they're already doing, often isn't realistic.

Hiring a full-time videographer comes with more than just salary. There's benefits, equipment, software licenses, and ongoing training to keep them current on gear and trends that shift every year or two. And even with all that investment, one person usually can't cover strategy, filming, editing, and distribution effectively on their own. Not without a serious amount of overtime, and eventually burnout, since video work tends to pile up right when everything else in the business is also busy.

What we've seen across a lot of industries is a different approach working better: instead of hiring in-house, companies partner with an experienced video team that can support things like promotional and product videos, recruiting and employer brand content, safety and training videos, and internal communication or process documentation, all under one relationship instead of one overworked hire.

This gives teams consistent, high quality content without the overhead of a full time hire. You're not paying for benefits or downtime between projects when there's nothing to film that week. You're paying for output, and only when you actually need it.

There's also a strategic upside that gets overlooked in this comparison. A dedicated internal hire has to be good at everything: pre-production planning, on-camera direction, lighting, audio, editing, motion graphics, and distribution strategy, all rolled into one job description. A video partner brings a full team where each of those pieces is handled by someone who specializes in it. That usually shows up clearly in the final product, especially once you start comparing footage side by side.

When video is built into your monthly or quarterly planning instead of treated as a one-off project, it becomes a real tool that supports your sales, hiring, and operations all at once. A single well-planned shoot can generate a promotional piece for your website, a training video for new hires, and a handful of social clips, all from one day on location, which is difficult for a solo in-house hire to pull off with the same level of polish.

So here's the question worth sitting with: how is your business currently handling content creation? Is it falling on your marketing team's plate along with everything else they're managing, getting squeezed in between campaigns and reporting? Or have you considered bringing in a video partner to help carry that load without adding headcount?

There's no universally right answer here. Some businesses genuinely have the volume and budget to justify an in-house hire, and that's a great option when it fits the scale of what they're producing. But for most growing companies, a partner model gets you further, faster, without the long ramp-up time of building an internal department from scratch and hoping the right person sticks around.

If you're on the fence, it's worth actually running the math. Add up the true cost of a full-time hire, salary, benefits, gear, software, training, and compare it to what a retainer with an outside team would cost for the same output. More often than not, the partner model comes out ahead, especially in year one when equipment costs alone can be significant.

Either way, the goal is the same: consistent, high quality video that supports your business instead of becoming one more thing someone has to manage on top of their actual job.
