What If You Just Need Better Marketing Partners Instead of More People?

by Jake Ressler | Sep 15, 2026

A lot of businesses hit a wall with their marketing and their first instinct is to hire more people, give someone a new title, or keep building out the department.

And sometimes that is the right move. If the workload is real and the budget is there, adding headcount makes sense. Nobody is saying never hire.

But what if I told you there was a better way for most companies, especially the ones who are growing fast and feel like they're constantly one step behind on marketing?

What most growing companies actually need is not more headcount on their marketing team. It's the right partners filling the right gaps so the people they already have can focus on what they do best. That's a different problem than "we need more hands." It's a "we need the right hands in the right spots" problem, and those two things get solved very differently.

Think about everything that lives under the marketing umbrella. Video. Photos. Web design. Copy. Social media. Blogs. Email. Brand strategy. Paid ads. SEO. And that's not even the full list.

Nobody on your internal team is going to be world class at all of that. You should not expect them to be, and honestly it's not fair to ask them to be. A marketing coordinator who is great at running your social calendar is probably not also a great video editor, a great copywriter, and a great web designer. That's three or four different careers you're asking one person to have mastered.

We see this play out over and over with the companies we work with. The smartest marketing teams are not the biggest ones. They are the ones that know exactly what they own internally and exactly who they call for everything else. They have a video partner, a photo partner, a web partner, a copywriter they trust. People who can plug in when needed and deliver at a level that a single internal hire rarely can match, because that internal hire is spread thin across ten disciplines instead of going deep on one.

There's also a flexibility piece that gets overlooked. When you hire someone full time, you're committing to that role whether the workload is heavy that month or light. A partner scales with you. Busy quarter, lean on them more. Slow quarter, dial it back. Try doing that with a salaried employee without it being awkward.

A great partner does more than just execute the work you hand them, too. A great partner helps you figure out what you actually need in the first place. We've pointed plenty of people in directions that had nothing to do with us, because it was the right call for their business, not ours. Sometimes the best advice we give someone is to go work with somebody else entirely. That's a strange thing to say if you're only trying to close a deal, but it's exactly the point.

That's what a real partner does. They think about your business, not just their invoice. They're not trying to become indispensable by keeping you dependent. They're trying to be the person you call because the work is good and the trust is real.

So before you post that next marketing job listing, stop and ask yourself what you actually need.

More people on payroll, or better people in your corner?

It's usually smarter to offload the things you're not great at and bring in experts who live and breathe that one specific thing all day, every day. Do that, and watch what your existing team can actually accomplish once they're only focused on what they're actually good at, instead of trying to be everything to everyone.

That's when marketing stops feeling like a scramble and starts feeling like it's actually working.
