Video Testimonials: The Most Underused Tool in Your Marketing Strategy

by Jake Ressler | Sep 16, 2026

We get this question a lot: what's the quickest, easiest way to start using video in your business?

The answer is simpler than most people expect, and it can make a real difference in how many prospects turn into clients.

The secret weapon? Testimonial videos.

We all see written reviews and star ratings. They're everywhere, and honestly, people have gotten pretty good at scrolling past them without even reading the text. But nothing beats actually seeing and hearing from a real client. There's something about watching a real person talk about their experience that a five star review just can't replicate. Tone of voice, facial expressions, the little pause before they answer a question honestly. None of that comes through in text.

Putting a face to a happy customer helps potential clients picture themselves in that same spot. They start to imagine what it would feel like to get the same result you delivered. And emotion, more than logic, is one of the strongest tools you have anywhere in a sales process. People buy on emotion and justify with logic afterward, and testimonial video is one of the fastest ways to tap into that.

Here's the part people miss: it doesn't have to be a fully produced, cinematic piece. Whether it's a polished interview with lighting and a second camera angle, or a quick phone video shot right after a project wraps, the key is the same. Show real, authentic clients talking about a real experience.

That's it. That's the whole strategy.

A lot of businesses overthink testimonial videos because they're picturing something that takes a full shoot day, a script, and a studio. It doesn't have to. Some of the most effective testimonial content we've helped clients capture came from a five minute conversation at the end of a project, filmed on a phone with decent lighting and a lav mic clipped to a shirt.

What matters more than production value is authenticity. Viewers can tell the difference between a testimonial that was clearly coached word for word and one where a client is just speaking naturally about their experience. The second one converts better every time, even if the lighting isn't perfect and the background isn't a studio backdrop.

If you're heading toward the end of the year and thinking about what content to prioritize next, testimonial videos are one of the highest return, lowest lift options on the table. You likely already have happy clients. The only step left is asking one of them if they'd be willing to talk on camera for five minutes.

A few tips if you're planning to capture these yourself:

Ask open ended questions instead of yes or no ones. "What made you choose us over other options?" gets a far better answer than "Were you happy with the service?" ever will.

Let there be a pause before they answer. People often say their best line after a second or two of thinking it over, so don't rush to fill the silence.

Capture more than you think you need. A two minute conversation can usually be cut down into three or four short, punchy clips for social, each one built around a single strong moment.

Don't script it word for word. Give them a few themes to hit and let them talk naturally. The second they start reading off a card, you lose the authenticity that made the format work in the first place.

Testimonial videos work because they take the burden of proof off of you and put it on someone your prospect can actually relate to. Instead of you saying "we're great to work with," you get a client saying it for you, in their own words, with nothing to gain by lying.

So as you plan out what to film next, put testimonials near the top of the list. It's one of the simplest additions you can make, and it tends to pay off faster than almost anything else you'll shoot this year.

We promise you'll see a real impact.
